What Multiplayer Gaming Really Means

What, exactly, does it mean for a game to be multiplayer?

Any game that allows for more than one player to play one instance at the same time, whether as competition or as a team, is a multiplayer game. Most multiplayer games are played over the internet, but some multiplayer games use bluetooth, WiFi, or a LAN network.

The number of players that can play at once in a multiplayer game vary from game to game. Most multiplayer games support between 5 and 50 players simultaneously, while Mass Multiplayer Online (MMO) games can support up to several thousand.
